Temps Magnifique!

I have a small obsession with watches, of which I own many – and Hermès of which I own nothing. Today, I found an perfect object of both my affections – The Hermès Arceau Marqueterie de Paille.

In these two exquisite timepieces, Hermès honors the ancient art of straw marquetry, a form of expertise that has become extremely rare.  Marquetry is the art and craft of applying pieces of veneer to a structure to form decorative patterns, designs or pictures. The blue and black motifs depict two iconic Hermès tie patterns featuring chevrons and tiny squares.  The rye straw used in these models is exclusive and produced by only one farm in France.  These two collector’s models are presented together in a precious Makassar ebony presentation box, itself adorned with straw marquetry. This article at Perpetuelle describes the process of this amazing design in great detail.

Once again, beauty and function steal my heart. Any admirers may feel free to send me one care of The MOD Studio.
