Please help us welcome the newest addition to the MOD creative team, Gina Kirkwood! She comes to us straight from the Sunflower State (that’s Kansas, y’all) and has already dived headfirst into her role as MOD’s resident marketing and communications expert. Read on to learn more about our new family member!
What inspired your career path?
Deciding to pursue a career in communications was a no-brainer, because writing is something that has always come naturally to me – I’ve been a total word nerd for as long as I can remember. Originally, I wanted to be a newspaper reporter or magazine writer, but I realized that my personality and interests made me a better fit in the public relations/marketing side of the communications field. Fostering relationships and building an organization’s image became a lot more interesting to me than extracting information out of people for the sake of writing an article.
What are three things most people don’t know about you?
1. My birthday is the Fourth of July.
2. Parallel parking is my secret talent.
3. I’ll ride any roller coaster in any amusement park, but I’m terrified of ferris wheels.
What do you do in your free time?
I love going to sporting events of all kinds, but I’ll admit it’s mostly because I love the experience. I’m much more into tailgating, eating overpriced concession stand food and trying to get on the jumbotron than actually watching the game itself. I also enjoy exercising, exploring the city and catching up on my reality TV shows and celebrity gossip. No shame here.
You’re new to Austin. Why did you choose to move here?
I’ve lived within a two-hour radius of Kansas City my entire life, so recently I started feeling a little restless and ready for a change. I’d always heard amazing things about Austin – nice people, delicious food, incredible live music – so I decided to take the plunge and make the move. I don’t like getting sentimental, but with each passing day and every new experience, I become more and more convinced that I made the right decision to move here.
Who would play you in a movie about your life?
Kristen Wiig, because we’re both friendly, fearless, a little spastic, a little loud, lovable and loyal. We’re like a couple of Cocker Spaniels, but with better hair.
